Wendigo (a Beginning)

There is a time, when the sun is not up, when dawn is but tentative and has not yet added hue to the eastern sky.  In that time color does not exist. It is a dim, indistinct world of greys, of dingy whites and faded shades of blacks, a world with no precision, with no clear definition. All things appear but shadows of actuality. Boundries are blurred, images smudged and blended into each other. There are no fixed edges, no precise realities of form. An environment with the sureal absence of colors brings sensation of confusion and panic to the imagination. There is a numbness of senses as nothing seems as it should be. The mind grasps for clarity and truth as though waking from a dream. All knowledge seems distorted and clouded. Senses scream for color, division, distinction and shape.  It longs for truth and fixed foundation.

It was at this time, three days a week, that Brian left the house to cross the field and descend down the long corn stubbled slope into the thick woods along the creek to check his muskrat traps. He held his hand out before his eyes, turned it over and back distinguishing only half familiar features. He lifted the hem of his plaid wool jacket to see that it was only checks of grey, no red, no white. The only disturbance of the stiffling, smothering cloud of indistinction was the crunch of his boots in the frosty husks along the broken jagged staggered rows of harvested corn. He was nearly to the woods before a faint tint of pale yellow rose in the east and began to illuminate the strange world and bring now an odd, yet comfortable familiarity to the landscape.

thanks, just writing scenes to stay writing. I sort of like it, this site. Wish there was more fiction.

Fantastic article with great imagery! It is almost like I am walking beside Brian and feeling the slight chill in the air before the edging of the morning sun drives the mist into oblivion.

Very well written, with evocative use of language. A few more paragraph breaks might have made it easier to read on screen, but overall a very nice piece!

Thanks, Ben. Just a sketch form a longer "idea'. I wasn't sure what to do for my first 'article' on the site so I fell back on imagery.
