Nothing Ever Goes Her Way

Laura Mitchell, 28, of Bedminster in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has had a difficult year. Actually, she’s had a difficult several years. She’s tried, but nothing ever seems to go her way. When she hits what she thinks is the bottom and begins the long crawl back, something always knocks her down again. Last week the police showed up at her place, arrested her and threw her into the county prison.
After she got out, her life seemed to be getting better. She had a wonderful holiday season in 2007, but in January 2008, the State Police busted her again for DUI, in Bucks County this time. Again, she had no choice but to plead guilty. After all, she had been drunk and was driving a car. They gave her a year this time, but at least it was in her home county.
Mitchell apparently used her time in prison to battle her alcohol problem. In April of 2009, was arrested and received a sentence of two years probation, but it was for drug possession. There was absolutely no alcohol in her system. Rehabilitation was part of the probation and it seemed to have helped. She apparently quit drugs, because on January 14, 2011 she was arrested for drunk driving. There were absolutely no drugs in her system.
The court allowed her to enter an accelerated rehabilitative disposition program. She attended educational classes and attended substance and alcohol abuse counseling sessions and meetings. She has a status-of-progress hearing scheduled for August 15th. She may not make it, though. During the time she was “rehabilitating” she was arrested for DUI on April 29th and again on May 10th by the same police department. At least it was in Bedminster this time, and close to home.
She had a hearing scheduled to face those charges in late July, but didn’t show up in court. A judge issued bench warrants on July 29th for “failure to appear,” probation violation and parole violation. The chances of her getting out of prison or getting her driver’s license back soon aren’t very good. She’d hit the bottom and was beginning the long climb back when things didn’t go her way again.
