Burning Down the House

The United Kingdom is just one in a series of socialist democracies that has found out the hard way that it actually cost something to give out free stuff.  For decades many western nations have been developing a, they claim compassionate, culture of dependency.  If a person could not learn enough in school, or couldn’t kick a drug or alcohol problem, or couldn’t speak the language well enough to get a job, the governments gave them money that was redistributed from people who did have jobs.  Everyone deserved a piece of the pie was the common belief.

Soon, a large portion of the society that wouldn’t have been, was finally getting their fair share (as determined by the compassionate few).  Unfortunately, there were now fewer people who contributed to the general kitty.  The money began to run short.  It was found that there is only so much blood you can draw from a fatted calf before it becomes ill and emaciated.  Tax inflow began to drop.  Financial institutions began to discover that they too had no money.  The government had to create money out of thin air to support not just the dependent masses whose hands were always out for more, but also banks and other institutions that were in the same, red ink situation.

Britain began to realize that money isn’t free.  It does not grow on trees.  They, like many other nations, learned that you can spend more than you have only up to a certain point. Eventually it has to stop or the society collapses into an abyss.  The UK was forced to cut $130 billion in public spending.  The dependent masses were outraged at the prospect of no longer receiving free stuff.  How could it be that they were no longer going to get their fair share?  Surely the wealthy could pitch in more.  It was only fair. It was their obligation to the society that allowed them to become wealthy.  Now, the deprived have begun to riot.  They are smashing, looting and burning things.  They are frantic and desperate, like addicts denied their need.

Can the United States be far behind?  The top earning 1% of Americans pay almost 40% of the income taxes collected.  The top 5% pay about 60%.  Half of the American people pay no income taxes at all.  Over 42% of the American people receive more in government subsidies that they pay in taxes.  Taxes collected from businesses and industries exceed the amount collected in income taxes.  Yet, those 50% who pay nothing continually accuse businesses, industries and the top 5% of being greedy and not paying their fair share.

We cannot eliminate deficit spending while half the country truly does not contribute their fair share.  Until we eliminated the culture of dependence and inspire individual responsibility we are on an unstoppable downward spiral that will result in the dependent masses taking what they perceive as theirs by smashing the nation beyond recognition, looting the coffers of government and burning down the house.

There is much truth to what you say. I believe there are other actions America can do to salvage ourselves but again I say, you shared valid points.
