Holocaust Victim Survives Attack

Ruth Salzman 77, of Abington, PA, lived through the Holocaust.  Born in Czechoslovakia in 1934, as a young girl she took the worst the Nazis could dish out and survived.  When it was over, she immigrated to the United States.  She was only 12.  Her life here was much better than she could have ever imagined during her imprisonment in the 1940’s—until August 24 this year, anyway.  The elderly woman was the target of a home-invasion attack.

Police say two teenagers broke into her house at about 6:30 in the evening, cutting through a screen and crawling in through a window.  The burglary turned into an assault when the pair found Ruth upstairs watching TV.  They “allegedly” hit her with a club, sprayed her several times with pepper spray and covered her face with a pillow while they looted her home.  Salzman said one of the culprits was armed with a hatchet. The two made off with three handguns (that she couldn’t get to in time), and an unspecified amount of cash and jewelry.

Jeffrey Lopergolo, 19, and Anibal Pastor, 17, both of Philadelphia have been arrested and are now behind bars in the Montgomery County Prison. When captured, the two told police that they targeted Salzman’s place “because it looked like someone rich lived there,” according to Deputy Chief John A. Livingood. Lopergolo and Pastor were arraigned on charges of robbery, theft, aggravated and simple assault and other related charges.  They were sent to the county prison in lieu of $500,000 cash bail, each.

Ruth Salzman is more angry and determined than hurt or frightened.  She learned what real pain and fear is long ago.  She’s seen what a failure to fervently resist can lead to. She told local TV station KYW that she plans to get a guard dog and will be keeping her handguns closer from now on.  She’s is more than willing to shoot them next time.

Amazing how when you learned to face death and trauma and emptiness at such an early age, how that toughens you and steels you against things that others might consider psyche shattering. Thanks for the article.
