All You Need is Patience

I was never much into the rock band Guns and Roses; I was a little too old to appreciate their shenanigans and their foul mouth’s. I didn’t particularly dislike them, and they did do one song I liked a lot. It’s called “Patience.” You might remember it from the radio. One of the lines goes: “Said woman take it slow the things will be just fine. All you need is just a little patience,” or something like that. It came to mind when I heard the news on the radio on my way to work this morning.

London Eleye, a 19-year-old Philadelphia woman was arrested in June on a murder solicitation charge. She was accused of posting on Facebook on May 23, 2011, “I will pay somebody a stack to kill my baby father.”  A ‘stack’ is street slang for $1,000. Her ‘baby father’ was 22 year old Cory White. According to the police, fifteen minutes before she posted the message she was involved in a heated argument with White and told him he would never see his daughter again.

According to court documents, several people who read the Facebook posting asked if Eleye was serious about wanting him killed. She posted, “DEAD. HATE HIM!” It didn’t take long before some one who took her seriously did respond. Timothy Bynum (18) wrote back: “Say no more…what he look like…where he be at…need that stack 1st. Eleye gave a description of White and told him where he lived. Bynum responded, “Ok, give me the stack, I’ll take care of it.”

Cory White found out about his girlfriend’s threat. He never had a good working relationship with the police, so he talked to reporters instead. Through them the police learned about the situation. They tracked down Bynum and searched his house, where they found a .22 caliber handgun. Bynum’s mother, Madeline Wimberly, claimed her son, who worked full time and went to school part time, was innocent. “He didn’t even know what the guy looked like! You can’t carry anything out if you don’t know what the person looks like,” she said. Bynum was arrested on weapons and conspiracy to commit murder charges.

Eleye and Bynum had bail set at $50,000 and $75,000 respectfully and were in jail since June. In August, Judge Patrick Dugan upheld the multiple charges against them, but did reduce bail to $35K and $50K and ordered both to be back in court on September 6th. But, within hours of the ruling, Cory White was murdered.

White was shot once in the chest a couple of blocks from his home in West Philadelphia. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Reports said, a brown car with an unknown number of ‘occupants’ pulled up on White and got out. There was a verbal confrontation and one of them pulled out a gun and shot him. The vehicle used had been stolen the previous day and was later found burning in nearby Yeadon, PA, according to police.

Naturally suspicions that Eleye was somehow involved arose. The following day, Eleye’s lawyer, Gerald Stein said, "I know where my client is, and therefore I know she wasn't [involved]. I recognize there is a coincidence in timing between the hearing yesterday and the death of Mr. White, but at this time that's all it is. And I don't think premature conclusions are warranted for my client or the codefendant." Another theory was that the killing was associated with White’s alleged participation in a July shooting. Police suspected he was the getaway driver in a murder at a nightclub in Upper Darby, PA. However it was ultimately determined that a drug deal gone bad was the reason for Cory White’s murder.

January 3, 2012, London Eleye pleaded guilty to conspiracy. Philadelphia prosecuter, Jack O’Neill said that she was given credit for admitting what she did and accepting responsibility for her actions. She received a sentence of 3 to 23 months in prison—time already served—and five years’ probation. Additional terms are, “During the entirety of her sentence she is to stay away from and not use any social media networks, such as Facebook or Myspace, and she also has to undergo anger management training,” O’Neill said. Bynum has yet to be brought to trial.

It seems to me that Ms Eleye simply had to wait. Sooner or later Mr. White, her ‘baby father’ was sure to be out of her life for good. But she must not have heard Guns and Roses sing: "Sometimes I get so tense, but I can’t speed up the time. But you know love, there’s one more thing to consider…. A Little patience, yeah, ooh yeah, need a little patience, yeah."
